To Strive for Something is Worth It Regarding life, I think we work very hard for most of our lives in order to attain a certain goal.  At least, we should.  We need something to strive for because without that, we have nothing.  Some people feel that work is fruitless and we should just have everything given to us.  How sad that is.  It is sad because people who feel that way are missing out on so much in life.  They are missing out on the sense of achievement that comes along with reaching your goal(s).  They are missing out on that feeling of pride that happens when you do something that everyone said you could never do.  This is not vanity, but pride that comes from achieving something.  They are missing out on meeting and working with others who have also achieved a difficult goal.  But most of all, they are missing out on life itself. Life is not one big party.  Life is made up of many facets, one of which is work....
May 14, 2017 Real life Takes You to the Dentist By Regina Frances Carey ©2017 As a teenage girl, thoughts of a beautiful life take over.  Watching old movies with glamorous women and handsome, dashing men invade your thoughts so much that you become a creature of dreams.  You want romance. You expect romance.  You expect your life to be a continuous romantic encounter that will never end.  Then, reality hits like a sucker-punch to the jaw. As an older woman, I often reflect back on my life and wonder what I could have done to change it.  Should I have dated more than I did, which was very little?  Should I have not been afraid to get hurt, which is why I didn’t date much.  Should I have gone to college earlier than I did?  These are some of the questions that I ask myself.  Then, I understand that no matter how I may have done things differently, it still would not have changed some things, such as the reality of life....
Here's a blast from the past.  This is my first homepage at Angelfire.  I haven't looked at it in years; but, it is still there.  Of course, HTML Gear, which I used to update it with, has been taken down becuse they want us to pay for everything now.  Ah, the good old days of the internet!  Of course, I had to write the HTML from scratch to do everything, including background color, frames, content and graphics. Anyway, here is a peek at it. http://www.angelfire.com/ny4/sylviekell/General.html
I am returning to DC tomorrow!  For Memorial Day weekend.  I will go to Arlington again; but, this time for a different purpose.  A friend of mine was killed in Afghanistan last year and he is buried there.  I must visit his grave. Other than that, it should be a good trip.

On The Value of Nothing or Another Way of Looking at Zero

Regarding life, I think we should appreciate everything in our lives, even if it is nothing. I have nothing to talk about today; so, I’ll write about nothing. I am sitting in my living room doing nothing because it is freezing cold outside. Nothing would convince me to go outside unnecessarily. I am eating a turkey club sandwich that I had delivered from a nearby coffee shop, and it tastes nothing like my own. I asked them to cook the bacon extra crispy, but it is nothing like how crispy I would cook it myself. I like bacon burnt to a crisp, so that there is practically nothing there. When I opened the bag, I looked first for the cole slaw and found nothing because they forgot the cole slaw! Oh well, that is nothing really, I won’t call again and make the delivery guy go back out into the freezing cold for nothing. If you think that’s nothing, wait until you read what I will write next. Well, there is nothing else I can think of right now which proves that this entire blog post has...

Things My Father Taught Me

Regarding life, I think we should remember what we have been taught by those who love(ed) us.  Let me elaborate. When I was young my father, or Daddy, as we called him, always took me places on Saturdays. We went all over the city, as far as we could. You see, I suffered from motion sickness as a child. I would ride two subway stops and get sick. My mother, who had no patience, decided that this only meant one thing; I would never travel anywhere. She felt that I would become one of those people who never left the neighborhood. My father, on the other hand, had a completely different view. He felt that if I was going to live in a city where you had to ride the subway, then I had to ride the subway. He would not settle for the idea of my becoming one of those people who never left the neighborhood; oh no. In fact, he was determined to make me into one of those people who traveled everywhere, saw and learned as much as I could and became stronger for it. There was just one problem;...

How Things Can Change in a Moment

Image
Regarding life, I think... It is a funny thing how many experiences turn out differently from how we envision they will be.  It's amazing how things can change.  Let me elaborate: On Dec. 3, 2011, I took a one-day trip to Washington because I wanted to do something different; in fact, I needed a change of scenery. I envisioned that this trip would be ordinary, that nothing different would happen.  Well, here is how it happened -- I spent part of the day in the Museum of American History as well as the National Gallery of Art.  I then went to Arlington National Cemetery to see the Changing of the Guard.  Here is part of the video I shot: Pretty cool, isn't it?   Anyway, as I was walking back to the Metro, a strange thing happened.   I reached the entrance and heard a man calling "Ma'am, ma'am, are you going to the metro?"   At first, I thought he was calling out to someone else; but then, I r...
